You are at your wits end. Your baby won’t stop crying. You are wondering if your baby crying is too excessive. Well the first thing that you need to accept is that baby’s cry naturally. It is the only way that they can communicate with you when they want something. Because of this you need to learn what your crying newborn wants, and this will come with time.
Why do babies cry a lot? They are trying to communicate with you. Once they are born babies will start to cry. Like all human beings babies have needs. We will examine these needs in this article to help you understand what your baby is trying to tell you. We will also take a look at excessive baby crying.
You need to prepare yourself for your newborn crying to increase in the first two to three months of their life. After reaching the crying peak it should decrease. All babies are different of course, and your child may not follow this pattern exactly. Your child crying like this can make you feel that they are in pain, but most of the time they are not.
You need to know the reason for a baby crying and in time you will be able to recognize the signs and take the appropriate action. There are several reasons for newborn baby crying and we will look at the most common reasons below:
Your first instinct to stop baby crying is likely to be that you think they are hungry. This is quite possible of course, and you should feed your baby to see if the crying will stop. Soothing a crying baby will not always work with a feed, but it is certainly worth a try.
There are a number of signs that you can look out for to determine if your baby is hungry. Your baby may indulge in lip smacking, putting their hands to their mouth, generally fussing or even rooting (if you stroke your baby’s cheek they turn their head towards your hand). Once you master these signs you can start feeding before the baby crying starts.
So you have fed your baby and believe that is the end of the crying. But baby starts crying again so what can it be? Whether you are breastfeeding your baby or using a bottle and formula they will swallow air. If you don’t help them to release the air they could feel uncomfortable.
Some babies will cope with air in their stomachs better than others will. Burping your baby is easy, so if baby starts crying after a feed you should do this. To burp your baby, walk around with them and pat them on their back continuously. Once that belch of air is out they should settle down.
All babies like to be held and cuddled. They like to be up close and personal with their parents, see their faces, listen to their heart beating, smell their parents and hear their voices. This is another baby crying reason that you can easily check.
A lot of new parents think that if they hold their newborn too much they will spoil them. This is not the case and you should take every opportunity that you can to hold your baby, especially in the first few months of life.
You can swaddle your baby in a blanket or just hold them close to you and speak softly to them. Try stroking your baby’s head gently to soothe them. Your baby will love the feeling of closeness and they should stop crying.
Your newborn baby will want to feel warm all of the time. If their diaper is wet this could make them feel cold and start baby crying. Warm does not mean hot. If you baby feels too hot then crying can start, so try removing a layer of clothing.
Not all babies cry straight away when their diaper needs changing. Some will not be able to bear it while others will put up with a dirty diaper for quite a time. This is something that you can easily check for and easily answer “why is baby crying?”
Just like adults, it is not always easy for a baby just to fall asleep. Most parents believe that their baby should be able to fall asleep easily but it can be harder for them than you think. If a baby is overtired and cannot sleep then a bout of baby crying is inevitable.
If you believe that your baby is overtired than hold them close to you and speak to them in a soft and loving voice. Your crying baby may not stop immediately, but after a while they should start to close their eyes and drift off to sleep.
If your baby is crying incessantly and whatever you do doesn’t make them stop then they could be suffering from colic. Please read our excellent article on colic which will explain what you need to do if this is the case.
